Finding an exercise regime you love as well as one that you want to stick to on a weekly basis can be a difficult challenge but there are ways you can tone up, get fit and have fun in the process 🙂
Laura Uglow, Personal Trainer in Richmond, helps you find the exercise YOU enjoy and that is right for you.
1.) Find an exercise that you find motivating and that you look forward to. If you are a social butterfly this might be team sports or a lunch time walking group…or if you recharge best exercising on your own then running may be the perfect workout for you. Do you prefer to exercise outdoors, do you love exercising to music or do you love variety from your workouts? Also think about the kind of exercise you used to enjoy as a child to get a better idea of the type of exercise you might learn to love.
2.) Build up slowly. Don’t expect too much too soon or you will find yourself feeling demotivated and not looking forward to your next session. If you haven’t run for years and then go and run flat out for 20 minutes you will not be feeling energised afterwards! Start with 1 minute of walking and 1 minute of running and build up slowly from there. Walking is also a great workout if you are feeling overwhelmed by all the options out there…a 45-60 minute power walk will definitely get you into your fat burning zone!
3.) Try it for 3 weeks before you give up. Is is often said that it takes 21 days to change a habit. Set yourself a goal and stick to it – once exercise becomes more enjoyable and you get the desired results you won’t want to give it up 🙂
4.) Team up with a buddy. Nearly two-thirds of us would exercise more if we had a friend to do it with according to research by the Women’t Sport and Fitness Foundation. And in a two year study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine those that paired up also lost more weight because of the competition it offers.
5.) Hire a Personal Trainer. There are endless new diets and how new class fads in the world of fitness but if you aren’t feeling particularly sporty it can feel overwhelming. A personal trainer will vary your exercise regime so that it becomes more enjoyable and you will be more likely to stick to it and see great results.
6.) Forget about everyone else. Don’t worry about other people. Everyone looks red and sweaty when they exercise!
